Description of research group and project
KI-NIH Doctoral Partnership Program in Neuroscience
The project involves collaboration with a laboratory located in the NIH Bethesda Campus. The student should spend a minimum of 12 months of the project period in the NIH laboratory. The student will be registered as doctoral students at KI in the department of the respective project leader. The collaborator at NIH will be assigned as co-supervisor. Funding is provided for four years.

The positron emission tomography (PET) Centre at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Centre for Psychiatry Research, over the last 30 years has been a leading Centre worldwide in the area of Psychiatry for research in development of PET tracers and CNS drugs. PET is used to measure radioligand binding to receptors and tracer amounts of CNS drugs in the animal and human brain. The development of PET tracers and radiolabelled drug candidates are necessary tools in the discovery and development of new drugs.

Aim of the project: The aim is to develop two new PET radiotracers for future PET studies in human subjects. Collaborative efforts on this aim should lead to transfers of ideas, techniques and radiotracers between the two centers.

Duties and responsibilities
Karolinska Institutet?s PET Centre is looking for an organic chemist who is interested to join a Postgraduate (PhD) research program in the area of PET radiochemistry. The program will focus on the development and evaluation of 18F-labeled versions of effective PET radiotracers for 5 HT1B and NOP receptors. In addition to generating two valuable new PET radiotracers, collaborative efforts on these two aims should also lead to transfers of ideas, techniques and radiotracers between the two centers.

The student should gain valuable skills in organic synthesis, radiolabeling techniques and in PET radiotracer evaluation. The project may be expected to lead to student first-author publications in the following areas, as a basis of the PhD thesis. The positions require a pronounced interest in practical synthetic research and accuracy, flexibility and good communication skills.

Eligibility/Qualifications
To be accepted as a doctoral student at KI, the student must be able to prove general eligibility with at least 240 credit points from previous studies as an undergraduate student at a university. You have university education in organic chemistry. You have good knowledge of English.

For further information on doctoral (third-cycle) education at Karolinska Institutet, see www.ki.se/doctoral.

Notes
NB! Students already registered as doctoral students at KI cannot apply.

Applicants should submit their CV and a brief motivation (of their specific interest in the project and in participating in this international programme) by e-mail to: registrator@ki.se

The application must be marked with the following registration number (Sw. diarienummer):Dnr 7113/2011-607 and the subject of the e-mail should be: Application for doctoral position within KI/NIH collaboration.
