hela Sverige Environmental Studies is a broad interdisciplinary research area that examines human interaction with natural processes. Environmental Studies cover the studies of ecological and other natural processes that affect the ecosystems over space and time, changes and environmental problems caused by anthropogenic influence as well as environmental policy, governance and sustainable development. Knowledge in both natural and social sciences is necessary for the understanding of environmental issues and problems. Research within Environmental studies at Södertörn University focuses on three integrated themes: Environmental Change and Ecological Processes, Environmental Governance and Environment and Development. Description
The doctoral student will work within the theme Environmental Change and Ecological Processes. At present, research within this theme includes ecology (plant, zoo-, paleo- and microbial ecology), environmental change (eutrophication, pollution and climate), ecosystem sensitivity and resilience, biodiversity, ecotoxicology and biogeochemistry. To benefit from our existing research environment and infrastructure, the document of research interest can relate to current research and project suggestions at Environmental Studies. The research must be relevant for the Baltic Sea region or Eastern Europe since the position is within the Baltic and Eastern European Graduate School, BEEGS
Entry requirements and selection
The general entry requirements are:
1. a second-cycle/master level qualification,
2. fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits awarded at second-cycle/master level, or
3. the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Specific entry requirements
The specific entry requirements are fulfilled by a student who has passed courses worth at least 90 credits, including a degree project/dissertation worth at least 15 credits at second-cycle/master level, within Environmental Studies or a related subject that is of central importance to the research area (i.e. studies within other disciplines that have focus on environmental issues).
Selection criteria
The following criteria are considered during selection:
• The applicant's merits and expertise
• Quality and feasibility of proposed research for a doctoral project
• Linkage to current research at Environmental Studies to ensure sufficient supervisory capacity and suitable research environment for the project
• The other specific requirements of the general syllabus for Environmental Studies
Employment
The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. An application for a place on a third-cycle programme is also an application for employment on a doctoral studentship. The employment is for no longer than the equivalent of four years' full-time studies. The provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. The first date of employment is
September 1, 2016.
