You will be given the opportunity to work in one of the world-leading groups on blue-UV surface-emitting lasers and combine device design and numerical simulations with device processing and characterization in close collaboration with international partners who are experts on epitaxial growth.
About us
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience advances the frontiers in photonics, quantum technology, nanoscience and future electronic systems - for technical and societal development. Our cross-disciplinary approach gives interesting collaborations in academy, industry and society, and is a driving force for innovations, results and breakthroughs. We offer a vibrant, international research environment and direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities.
About the research project
The Photonics Laboratory focuses on optoelectronics, ultrafast optics, and fiber-optical communication. A strong research focus is on ultraviolet (UV) and blue surface-emitting devices, such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and photonic-crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSELs), where our expertise lies in device design, simulation, laser fabrication, and characterization. Our team has pioneered a thin-film lift-off process for AlGaN materials using electrochemical etching, enabling integration with high-quality photonic structures. This has led to world-first demonstrations of blue VCSELs with with high-contrast gratings for polarization pinning, thin-film flip-chip UVB LEDs, and optically pumped UVB and UVC VCSELs at 310 and 275 nm, as well as the first optically pumped UV-B and UV-C PCSELs. Our lab now seeks two PhD students to work on blue PCSELs and UV VCSELs.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Physics, Material Science, Photonics or Electrical Engineering, with knowledge in semiconductor physics and optoelectronic devices
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Experience from device simulations, device fabrication in a clean room environment or device characterization
You should be able to work independently as well as in a group.
What you will do
• Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
• Develop blue PCSELs or UV VCSELs as part of our research team
• Work in close collaboration with international partners responsible for epitaxial growth
• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Microtechnology and Nanoscience
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 20 percent of working hours
Contract terms
• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is limited to four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
