Doctoral student position: Aligning Strategy & Practice - Digitalization in Construction

Join us as a PhD student exploring how contractor organizations translate digitalisation strategies into practice, where strategic visions meet project realities, and research meets industry collaboration to advance digital transformation in the ACE sector.

In this project, you will study the dynamics of digital transformation through perspectives from organizational theory, strategy research and innovation studies. The focus is on how digital strategies are enacted within contractor organisations, and how ambitions at management level translate into practices at project level. We're looking for someone curious about how people, organizations, and technology interact.

About us
The Construction Management and Engineering (CME) division at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering offers a creative, innovative and inclusive research environment focused on construction and project management, leadership and digital construction. Our research covers the full construction process from individual projects and their actors to organisational and industry-level practices.

With a strong digital construction profile, our vision is to explore how digital transformation unfolds in the construction sector and to develop tools, processes and methods that support both organisations and practitioners, always in close collaboration with industry.

About the research project
The project explores how digitalization strategies are implemented within contractor organizations, focusing on the interplay between strategic ambitions and project realities.

Through case studies in large contracting firms, it investigates how digital platforms are introduced and used on site, and how they transform practice.

The research aims to improve efficiency, productivity, and sustainability by aligning digital strategies with daily project routines and by providing actionable insights for both industry and academia. This PhD will contribute to advancing both theory and practice.
