Urban Studies is a multidisciplinary institution with approximately 80 employees and 2,000 students, responsible for education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. There are extensive training programs in environmental studies, surveying, real estate, architecture, visualization and communication, urban planning, economics, and transportation management as well as courses in leadership and organization, business, and human resources. The department conducts research in three interacting areas: sustainable change, social development and urban integration, and real estate, housing and the built environment. All of the department?s research aims to make an active contribution to society.
Doctoral programme in Urban Studies
The doctoral subject area Urban Studies can be defined as the scientific study of the content, form, planning and transformation of urban areas. The subject is positioned at a point of interchange between social and cultural practices on the one hand, and the material world of manufactured landscapes, buildings, infrastructure and everyday objects on the other. Urban Studies is a very broad topic area that deals with many interrelated aspects of urban life, requiring a multi- and interdisciplinary approach in terms of research methods. See General curriculum for postgraduate studies in Urban Studies.
The doctoral topic area Urban Studies includes the research area MUSA (See Research Area MUSA
This doctoral position is a collaboration between MUSA and K2, the National Public Transport Knowledge Centre. K2?s focus is on public transport in Sweden?s metropolitan regions and is a collaboration between Lund University, Malmö University and the National Road and Transport Research Institute, VTI. Research and training activities at K2 are multidisciplinary, and carried out in close collaboration between different academic disciplines, and with actors and organizations outside the scientific community, both nationally and internationally (see
http://www.k2centrum.se/) .
Research topic area for this position
The doctoral student?s work will be directed towards questions related to interaction and collaboration between different urban actors and its implications for the development of public transport and its consequent impact on sustainable urban development. In relation to this, the issues of socially sustainable urban development, segregation, integration and mobility are key.
The dissertation project is expected to contribute to developing theoretical understandings of the complexity of a situation where many different actors, from different sectors, work together to deliver improvements in spatial and public transport planning are included. Through increased knowledge of the motivations driving these different interacting players, the PhD project will contribute knowledge on sustainable urban development in relation to public transport.
The doctoral student will be active at the Department for Urban Studies and carry out her/his doctoral training within MUSA. The doctoral research work will be carried out in the context of K2, where the doctoral student is expected to contribute to an active research environment.
