Department of Animal Nutrition and Management
The Department of Animal Nutrition and Management (HUV) conducts basic and applied research on the quality, composition, nutritional value and usability of animal feed metabolism and about housing and care. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production with good animal care that produces high-quality food. Our research concerns both agricultural production animals as sport and companion animals.

The research is often interdisciplinary and conducted in collaboration with other institutions, as well as in Sweden and abroad. Research on sustainable production systems in low-income countries is an important one part of our business.

HUV is responsible for basic education, research and postgraduate education in the subject areas nutritional physiology, feed science, management issues and aquaculture.

From field to feed - Nutrient quality and technical solutions for feeding silage to organic pigs
Doctoral education subject: Animal Science

Description:
In Swedish organic pig production, silage from ley crops plays an important role. Pigs should receive good quality roughage to perform highly motivated behaviours which promotes good animal welfare and ley crop silage has the potential of supplying pigs with nutrients, reducing therefore the need for purchased more expensive protein feed. To count on high-quality organically grown protein feed resources is challenging, and there is a need to find sustainable and resilient locally produced feed resources. Since grasses and legumes have a good composition of protein and amino acids, they have the potential to be included as a protein source in diets to organic pigs. However, in order for pigs to consume and utilize the nutrients in silage efficiently, silage should be adjusted to the pigs' nutritional needs. This means that it has to be tasty with ley crops that the pigs prefer, and with an optimal chemical composition according to the nutritional requirements of the pigs.

This project aims to evaluate how silage from ley crops can be used more resource efficiently throughout the production chain, in current and future production systems for organic pigs. This will include studies spanning from feed quality and feeding, to animal response and gut health. From a practical perspective, more knowledge on choice of forage crops, nutritional quality and palatability of silage to pigs as well as how to manage the silage at farm level to include it in dry and liquid feeding systems is important for organic farmers to get use of this feed resource in a profitable way. The work tasks includes planning and execution of experiments as well as sampling and laboratory analyses. Engagement in teaching could be possible to some extent.

Qualifications:
For employment, a degree at advanced level is required. Suitable degree is animal agronomist, master's degree in animal science or biology, veterinary or equivalent training.
