Join our computational mechanics team at Chalmers University of Technology! As a Doctoral student with us, you will develop numerical procedures for multi-physics and multi-scale finite element simulations in porous media.

About us
The Doctoral student position is to be placed at the Division of Material and Computational Mechanics, which belongs to the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The activities of the division are focused on modeling the mechanics of structures, components, and processes along with the involved materials, providing mechanics-based solutions and virtual solution tools to our engineering challenges.

Currently, about 15 Doctoral students are working within our main research areas: Lightweight materials and structures, Multi-phase and metallic materials, Process modeling and simulation, Railway mechanics, and Structural mechanics. We foster an inclusive, friendly, and helpful work environment to which we welcome you to contribute.

About the research project
Many real-world applications in engineering and science involve porous media that consist of a solid skeleton with a fluid-filled pore-system. This project deals with modeling and simulation of deformation and transport in porous media using the finite element method.

We will establish and exploit detailed models at the pore-scale in conjunction with accurate and efficient numerical approaches for scale-bridging to obtain effective models at the macro-scale. An important part of the latter will be the development of reduced order models, reducing the cost of the pore scale simulations.

Extending from the pure mechanical problem, the project will also address multi-physics processes in porous media. As an important application, the interaction between ion transport (migration, diffusion and convection) and mechanical loads in batteries will be addressed.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Applied Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Civil Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, or similar field
• Documented knowledge in continuum mechanics and FEM (including programming thereof) is required
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English

• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.

Our research is carried out by an interdisciplinary team of scientists. You will be expected to interact and collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and take full responsibility for your own tasks within the joint research effort. Furthermore, you are expected to take initiative and work independently when required.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Education in numerical analysis and/or advanced programming is meritorious

What you will do

• Your major responsibility as a Doctoral student is to pursue your own doctoral studies related to the project. The major goal of the project is to develop numerical models for multi-scale and multi-physics problems based on the finite element method, including both theoretical developments and numerical implementation.
• You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
• Your research activities will contribute to improved knowledge in the scientific field, in particular by presenting your results in scientific journals and at international conferences.
• In addition to the research project, you will also take courses at the advanced level within the Graduate school of Solid and Structural Mechanics.
• The position also includes teaching courses within Chalmers' undergraduate level, or performing other duties at the department, corresponding to up to 20 percent of working hours.

Contract terms

• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is limited to five years, which includes teaching duties 20% of full time.

• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
• Read more about Sweden's generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.

Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence. We celebrate diversity and consider equality and inclusion as fundamental aspects of all our activities.
