The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.

Job description
The PhD project is part of the research group Marine Plankton Ecology and Applications and the multidisciplinary project ALGOLAND, which aims to develop biological solutions to address major societal challenges such as climate change, eutrophication and food/feed production in the Baltic Sea region. Microalgae are used to clean industrial waste streams, such as flue gas or process water and the biomass evaluated as animal feed supplement. The project is a close collaboration between academia and industry and has competence within biology, ecology, environmental science, sustainable development and economy.

We seek a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong background in microbial ecology. The project will explore mixotrophic cultivation of microalgae to increase nutrient recovery efficiency from waste water and prolong the cultivation season. The student will work in laboratory and pilot plant setups using mono- and polyculture approaches to evaluate the efficiency of mixotrophic microalgal cultivation and study the importance of algae - bacteria interactions for nutrient uptake.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE and the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she

• Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level or equivalent in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology
• Completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
• in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.

Specific requirements

• Documented experience of working with waste stream and biotechnological remediation
• Documented experience of microalgal isolation and cultivation
• Documented experience in phytoplankton/marine ecology research.
• Documented experience in laboratory work and experimental design.
• Very high proficiency in written and spoken English.

Other assessment grounds

• Important personal qualities are to be creative, good at problem-solving, a team-worker, independent resilient, and structured.
• Experience of phytoplankton isolation, cultivation and microscopic identification.
• Experience of biochemical analysis of algal biomass
• Documented skills in molecular methods applied to microbial systems.
• Holding a B driver's license

Employment: Employment as a doctoral student is limited according to HF chapter 5 § 7. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent postgraduate studies full-time for four years.
