Doctoral student in Mathematics with focus on
Acquisition and image quantification in time resolved
X-ray tomography.
Lunds universitet, MAX IV, Imaging

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are
currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.

As PhD student, you will be part of the imaging group at MAX IV Laboratory and the Mathematics (Faculty of Engineering) and Numerical Analysis division at the Center of Mathematical Sciences.

Your PhD project will be part of the Marie Sk odowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, "Multiscale, Multimodal, Multidimensional imaging for EngineeRING" or in short MUMMERING. The network is concerned with interdisciplinary R&D and training in 3D imaging and its application in materials- and information science. The network offers totally 15 PhD positions. Information about all 15 PhD positions is coming soon. The network is concerned with interdisciplinary R.

Scientifically, the network addresses the challenges 3D imaging has to overcome for being a workable tool in materials science and engineering. This means filling the gap between the capacities by which experimental data can be captured and by which the data can be processed. Today the data processing lags behind.
Currently there is only a weak unidirectional link between data acquisition and data reconstruction/ analysis. The aim of this project is to establish a match between acquisition protocols and quantification tools for complex cellular materials such as aluminium foams. Through these new concepts users from
academia and industry will be able to design X-ray imaging studies with a much higher success rate than it is today. The mathematical aspects of this development will be the main task in this project. The work will result in creating a toolbox for the fast reconstruction and quantification of dynamically changing
complex cellular systems with a direct feedback to the tomographic acquisition at synchrotron imaging beamlines. Using this toolbox, fast processes in aluminum foams will be studied.

Work duties
As PhD student, your main duties are to devote yourself to your research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Moreover, we expect that you actively involve with and seek benefit from:

• The training provided by the MUMMERING network
• Secondment to the industry partner, and potentially other network partners

Via the mandatory network training provided by MUMMERING, you will participate in summer schools, workshops, and scientific meetings together with top scientists and your 14 fellow PhD students in the MUMMERING network. During your secondment, you will work with data acquisition at a largescale
synchrotron facility and with industrial software implementation and patenting.

Admission requirements
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

A person meets the specific admission requirements if he or she has at least 90 credits of relevance to the subject area, of which at least 60 credits from the second cycle and a specialised project of at least 30 second-cycle credits in the field, or a second-cycle degree in a relevant subject.

In practice this means that the student should have achieved a level of knowledge in mathematics that corresponds to that of Master of Science programmes in Engineering Mathematics or Engineering Physics or a Masters degree in mathematics or applied mathematics. The student must also be judged to have the potential to go through the Ph.D. programme.

Assessment criteria
The assessment of the application will be made on the following criteria:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project of study.
2. The ability to complete the Ph. D. programme.
3. Independence and quality in academic work which means the ability to:
• Plan and perform research.
• Express themselves both in spoken and written form.
• Learn new things and present the state of knowledge in relevant subject matter.
• Discuss possible applications of new knowledge.
4. Ambition, perseverance and motivation to conclude graduate studies in mathematics.

The assessment will be based on provided documents, written application, and for a smaller select group of applicants, interviews and possibly an audition talk.
The candidate can be of any nationality but is required to undertake physical transnational mobility meaning that you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden [HAB1]for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.

Terms of employment
A PhD position is an employment with the main duty to be engaged in PhD studies according to the study plan. The duration of PhD studies is 4 years full time studies. In addition, those appointed to doctoral student position may be required to work with educational tasks, research and technical/administrative duties at a level of at most 20% of full time. The position is then extended correspondingly, however not longer than corresponding to 5 years full time employment. PhD positions are subject to special regulations. These can be found in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100, ch. 5, with updates). Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to PhD position.
