The successful candidate will investigate the structure and dynamical properties of novel mixed-anion materials using advanced neutron scattering techniques at international large-scale neutron facilities and vibrational spectroscopy at Chalmers.
About us
The project will be conducted within the research group of Prof. Maths Karlsson at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
The group focuses on the characterization of structure and dynamics in functional materials, with an emphasis on applications in energy-relevant technologies such as LEDs, solar cells, batteries, and fuel cells, as well as catalysis.
Our research is mainly experimental, and the group has extensive experience in the use and development of techniques at large-scale neutron and photon sources, vibrational spectroscopy, and optical techniques. Most of the work is carried out in close collaboration with leading research groups in Sweden and abroad, with complementary expertise in materials synthesis and computational modelling.
About the research project
Mixed-anion materials-compounds containing multiple anions such as O2, N3, and H-are an emerging class of materials with unique properties that differ from those of single-anion counterparts. One such property is their ability to conduct anions, which can be exploited in applications such as hydrogen storage, batteries, and catalysis.
However, fundamental questions regarding their defect chemistry and anion conductivity remain to be answered. This PhD project aims to investigate novel mixed-anion materials to unravel the relationships between chemical composition, local structure, and dynamics-knowledge essential for designing new materials with properties optimized for specific technologies.
The main research tools will include advanced neutron spectroscopy at facilities such as the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (UK), Institut Laue-Langevin (France), Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, Spallation Neutron Source (US), and the upcoming European Spallation Source (Sweden). Vibrational spectroscopy (Raman and infrared) will be conducted at Chalmers University of Technology.
The PhD student may also perform first-principles calculations to investigate structural and dynamical properties, complementing and supporting the experimental work.
Who we are looking for
To qualify for the position, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in a relevant field such as physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field.
To be successful, you need to be highly motivated and have strong analytical and communication skills. You will also need strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.
What you will do
Your main responsibility will be to carry out the PhD project as described above. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate your research results broadly through meetings, seminars, national and international conferences, informal reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
As a PhD student, you will also take courses corresponding to 60 ECTS and participate in undergraduate teaching, corresponding to approximately 10% of your working time.
Contract terms
• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is limited to four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
