The position is funded by CAISR (Center for Applied Intelligent Systems Research), which is a long-term research program on intelligent systems at the School of Information Technology.

http://www.hh.se/4.2515361d1351369447180004010.html Focus of the center is on aware intelligent systems, computer systems that are human aware, situation aware and to some extent "self-aware". This means systems that can communicate with humans, systems that can be aware of human intentions, systems that can fuse information and be aware of the situation and not just individual sensor readings, and systems that can be self-monitoring. The subject expertize in the center is in machine learning, data mining, signal analysis and mechatronics.
Principal duties
The PhD student will mainly be working in the project Situation Awareness for Ambient Assisted Living (SA3L), which focus on the development of robust machine learning systems to improve the understanding of resident behavior patterns, health and needs within sensor-equipped home environments. These home-based systems are expected to process and share information across different physical homes in order to increase accuracy for applications such deviation detection (e.g. to detect falls at home). To meet such challenges, the research aims to increase understanding of how methods such as transfer learning and online learning can be used to enhance systems ability to generalize and evolve through incremental machine learning. Furthermore, the project also concerns research on methods for finding optimal sensor configurations in the home.
Halmstad Intelligent Home (HINT) is located at the campus and will be used in the research. HINT is an experimental apartment equipped with sensors and let researchers to develop and apply novel algorithms for understanding human behavior patterns.
The research will be performed in close collaboration with our industrial partners. The successful candidate will also be expected to carry out some teaching and administrative tasks at the department.
Qualification
The position is intended for someone with a master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or closely related fields. Desirable skills include expertise in statistics, and signal analysis as well as with tools like Matlab or Python.
Salary
Doctoral students are employees of the University and paid a salary according to a uniform salary scale, adjusted in relation to the progress in education and the first step is SEK 25 000 before taxes. The position includes doctoral studies up to doctoral degree and is annually extended in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §7. The total employment period is four years but may be extended to a maximum of five years if the student performs 20% teaching or other tasks within the university.

General Information
The working language is English and no knowledge of Swedish is required to start working at the University. Also for daily life, English is spoken widely and Sweden has the highest English Proficiency index in the world. Of course, it's advisable that the employee learn Swedish. Both the University and the local government provide extensive facilities. Halmstad is a popular summer destination located on the Swedish west coast. It is situated in between two cosmopolitan areas: the Copenhagen-Malmö-Lund area and the Gothenburg area, making it a well-connected, yet a pleasantly calm place to live. Halmstad can be reached by a direct train connection from the Copenhagen Kastrup Airport, as well as other local airports (e.g., Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, Halmstad, and Helsingborg/Ängelholm airports).
