About us
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a fully integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology as principals. The department is widely recognised for excellent research and education, and is strongly international with approximately 300 employees from more than 40 countries. The department is organised into four divisions where research spans from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. The position is placed in the Logic and Types unit of the Division of Computing Science, with Chalmers University of Technology as the employer.

About the research project
As a PhD student, you acquire the skills and knowledge to conduct independent research, culminating in writing a scientific dissertation contributing to the development of knowledge in the subject area. More specifically, you will read, review, and write research papers; give presentations; take courses that complement your background; and perform research appropriate for the topic of the project you are appointed to under the guidance of the supervision team.

This position offers a great opportunity to develop your scientific and technical skills within a team of leading researchers in structural and algorithmic graph theory. The project focuses on exploring the tractability and intractability of graph problems in both the classical and parameterized settings. The goal is to develop general tools that can provide efficient algorithms for a wide range of graph problems.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in computer science, mathematics or a related field
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English


• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Knowledge in graph theory, classical/parameterized complecxity, and algorithms
• A documented track record of research in the area of the project

What you will do

• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Computer Science and Engineering
• Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms

• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
