Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre
SLU is one of the world's highest ranked universities in several subject areas and is ranked #1 in forestry (CWUR). At our centre we carry out research, teaching and dissemination of scientific findings with direct application to the sustainable management of forests. We are a multidisciplinary institution, with global relevance but specialized expertise on issues related to the dynamic forest landscapes of southern Sweden. We closely collaborate with multiple stakeholders and conduct applied research in silviculture, forest ecology, pathology, policy and planning. We teach bachelor, Masters and PhD level courses addressing all of these subject areas.

The puzzle of forestry and ungulate interactions - a missing piece is in the understory
Description:
We are looking for a person who, as part of a PhD, will develop new tools to estimate the effects of different forest management alternatives on herbivore forage, including the socially and ecologically vital ericaceous dwarf-shrubs (e.g. bilberry, cowberry). Forest management and browsing by moose and deer are important drivers of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services. To understand how these drivers interact, and to better project game populations and damage on production trees requires that we fill a major knowledge gap regarding their combined implications for forage availability at stand and landscape levels. The work includes field data collection across Sweden, experiments, and the development of functions and models (Heureka) based on the project's field data and the National Forest Inventory. The project can potentially incorporate aspects of nutritional ecology. The PhD student will be part of an active research group, and together we strive to maximize the impact of our research on practical game- and forest management, including outreach activities to forest owners and hunters.

Qualifications:
You should have a Master degree in biology, forest science or equivalent. You should have a strong interest in forest ecosystems, and an interest in (and preferably experience with) working with large data sets and modelling. Experience in wildlife ecology and/or plant ecology is a merit. Focus is given to your analytical and problem solving abilities, your ability to work independently and your personal characteristics.
