Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science at Linnaeus University is seeking an outstanding PhD candidate

Field of subject for the appointment: Environmental Science
Placement city: City of Kalmar

Project description
The PhD project will focus on dredging/remediation of contaminated bottom sediments in coastal areas and lakes/bays, and the selected student will have as their main tasks the development of cost-effective methods for the uptake and recovery of nutrients and metals from both the solid and aqueous phase. Restoration of eutrophic and/or polluted lakes and other marine environments will be in focus.

The environmental burden and health and safety concerns as well as the potential release of toxic compounds during the entire uptake and recovery process will be studied (i.e. excavation, processing, treatment, and reuse/recovery of sediments and sustainable management of by-products and waste water). The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration with the municipality, the business sector, and companies interested in the process.

The candidate will actively participate in relevant research activities and technology development in established partnerships with academia, Swedish industry, and professional communities. The candidate will be involved in multi-disciplinary research, environmental science, chemistry, statistics, computational fluid dynamics, and environmental risk analysis. The candidate is also expected to carry out research in the field in collaboration with other research groups both nationally and internationally.

The candidate is furthermore expected to keep track of the development within his/her own field of study, as well as any other societal developments that are important to his/her work at the university.

The PhD candidate will be following a structured research education process that is followed up annually.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance, a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. The scope of the appointment is 100%.
