The Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Linnaeus University is looking for suitably qualified candidate who is highly interested and motivated to carry out research education leading to a Ph.D. in the field of Sustainability Sciences / Environmental Sciences / Geochemistry / Water Resources.

Employment: Employment as a doctoral student is limited according to HF chapter 5 § 7. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent postgraduate studies full-time for four years.

Job description
Urban soils generally contain elevated concentrations of multiple heavy metals, e.g. Pb. So, while there are many positive health effects related to gardening, it is also possible that urban gardeners are exposed to elevated contaminant concentrations via their food consumption.
The first aim of the research project is to characterize metal exposure ranges for people who practice urban gardening in allotments of different contamination degree in northern Europe (Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands). The characterization will be based on different analyses (both standard and novel ones) of a large number of allotment vegetable samples and matching cultivation soils. A novel approach through the sampling-analyses chain is facilitated by international collaboration (Linnaeus University and SLU in Sweden together with RIVM in the Netherlands and the James Hutton Institute in Scotland) and the active partnership of the analytical company ALS Scandinavia in Luleå, Sweden, where the majority of the analyses will be performed. Through the ambitious analysis plan, we add value by providing data for our second aim: to improve our understanding about metal uptake by different types of crops, and how exposure assessments related to cultivation in potentially contaminated soil are undertaken.
According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she
• Has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level
• Completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or
• in other way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Specific requirements also include
• a solid background in geochemistry, environmental risk analysis/exposure science, or toxicology.
• a strong ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
• a high proficiency in written and spoken English plus either Swedish or Dutch.
Assessment grounds
• Experience of fieldwork and laboratory work
• Communication skills
• Will to interact with people of different backgrounds (gardeners, authorities and other researchers), from different countries
• Knowledge about plant physiology/contaminant uptake and translocation would place the candidate at an advantage
