Job description
Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of how bacteria carry out specific steps in element cycling is lacking. This project will investigate the molecular mechanisms employed by marine bacteria carrying out proteorhodopsin-mediated photoheterotrophy. Work includes carrying out laboratory experiments with model marine bacteria in seawater cultures under different nutrient and light conditions. Analysis approaches include state-of-the-art methods in marine microbial ecology, including rate measurements of a variety of bacterial activities and metabolisms and gene expression profiling. The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE and the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she has;

• been awarded a degree on second-cycle level or equivalent in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or other closely related fields.
• has completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level,
• or may have acquired principally equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

Specific requirements refer to:

• High proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently to solve problems
• Capacity to interact well in a research group (i.e. teamwork).

Assessment grounds

Experience with advanced molecular biology methods (e.g. [meta] genomics and/or [meta]transcriptomics), quantitative PCR, and bioinformatics

Experience of working in the field and familiarity with microbial ecology methods and experimental design

Expertise in performing mesocosm or microcosm experiments with natural marine microbial assemblages and/or cultured bacterial isolates.

Documented knowledge of statistics.
