The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.

Job description
Future climate scenarios predict increasing surface temperatures, decreased salinity, and changes in precipitation patterns that will intensify eutrophication effects on coastal systems. Future conditions are thought to influence phytoplankton succession and promote harmful algal blooms and blooms of filamentous nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria. Thus, understanding how climate drivers affect the activity and distribution of blooms in relation to biotic factors (grazing, competition) is essential for predicting consequences of climate change on the Baltic Sea ecosystem.
We seek a skilled and highly motivated PhD student for a project examining the structure of the phytoplankton community in coastal systems. The observations will be used to establish links between the diversity, response and adaptation of phytoplankton and consequences in terms of food web efficiency, and pelagic-benthic coupling. The research will utilise a combination of methodologies including single cell approaches, laboratory cultivation experiments and field-based studies. Microbial and molecular tools will be used.
This study is part of a larger multidisciplinary project that seeks to understand diversity, ecology and physiology of microbial plankton communities within a climate change perspective. The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the research environment ECOCHANGE (
https://www.umu.se/ecochange/) and the Linnaeus University Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology".
According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.
Requirements
A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she:
• has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level, completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level, or in another way, in Sweden or abroad, has acquired principally equivalent knowledge.
Assessment grounds
• A high proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Documented experience within the field of microbial, plankton or food web ecology in aquatic systems.
• Experience of:
• Microbial/algal laboratory work
• Aquatic field sampling
• Molecular methods
• Statistical software analysis
• Driver's license (class B)
