Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as disease ecology.

Job description
The fish community in the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea is highly dynamic and involves species of both freshwater and marine origin. Many freshwater species (e.g. coastal keystone predatory species pike Esox lucius, perch Perca fluviatilis and trout Salmo trutta) have a life-history that include migration between spawning habitats in freshwater and forage habitats in coastal areas.

Currently, the Baltic Sea are changing due to anthropogenic pressure and climate change that may impose dramatic changes in the fish community. This may include altered distributions, movement patterns and species interactions. Another potential consequence is that freshwater species as catfish (Silurus glanis) will expand and invade coastal waters as a response to decreased salinity, increased temperature, high production and low abundances of competing predators.

We search for a skilled and motivated PhD student with an interest in movement ecology, species interactions and conservation to examine causes and consequences of changes in the dynamics of the coastal Baltic Sea fish community. The work will likely include a combination of laboratory experiments, field studies and genomic tools to shed light on these intriguing issues. This project is part of a larger multidisciplinary project that seeks to understand coastal fish ecology communities within a climate change perspective.

Specific requirements also include

• Previous experience in fish ecology/aquatic ecology research.
• Previous experience in planning and conducting fieldwork and laboratory experiments.
