Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

Project description
Future climate scenarios predict increasing surface temperatures, decreased salinity, and changes in wind-driven upwelling in the Baltic Sea that will likely induce significant changes in coastal fish communities. The communities may change because of immigrating, alien species but also by migration of freshwater species that may invade and thrive in the fresher, warmer Baltic Sea. We are seeking a PhD student for a project examining (potential) invasive fish species to the Baltic Sea. The project also includes investigating intra-specific adaptive genetic differences along a north-south gradient. The work will include a combination of laboratory experiments and field studies. Ecological and molecular tools will be used. This study is part of a larger multidisciplinary project that seeks to understand coastal fish ecology communities within a climate change perspective.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE and the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.
According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration. However, before a doctoral degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20% of a full-time post.

Requirements

A person fulfils the general entry requirements if he/she

• has been awarded a degree on second-cycle level or equivalent in Biology, Aquatic Ecology or other closely related fields.
• has completed the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which 60 credits on second-cycle level,
• or may have acquired principally equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroaD

Specific requirements within the field of ecology include:

• Previous experience in fish ecology/aquatic ecology research.
• Previous experience in fieldwork and laboratory experiments.
• Knowledge of statistics and in working with statistical software.
• Skills in molecular methods for fish.
• Very high proficiency in written and spoken English.
