Doctoral Student in Earth Sciences, specializing in hydrogeology/water resources

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Earth Sciences, Gothenburg
First day of employment: 2017-05-01 or as agreed
Reference number: UR 2017/124

The Department of Earth Sciences has 65 employees. The department curriculum is designed to educate geologists, physical geographers and geographers. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, biogeochemisty, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. We have bachelor and masters programs in Earth Science and in Geography as well as third-cycle education in several earth-science specialties.

Job assignments

The announced PhD student position will be part of the hydrogeology research group, which is led by Prof. Roland Barthel who will be the main supervisor of the PhD student. Prof Deliang Chen, Physical Geography and Regional Climate will be co-supervisor to the student.

The hydrogeology research group has a focus on developing strategies for groundwater research at the regional in particular in relation to climate change. Within this context, the PhD student will contribute to the development of an approach for the classification of groundwater systems based on hydrogeological characterization of groundwater observations. The PhD student will thereby work closely together with another PhD student who focusses on statistical aspects, in particular time series analysis of groundwater classification.

Other research areas the hydrogeology group is currently working with are Urban Hydrogeology, Groundwater in Coastal areas and Participatory Approaches in Integrated Water Management. The group has access to a large park of field and laboratory equipment (hydrochemistry, geophysics, hydraulic tests) which is shared with other groups within department. The successful candidate will be working within the project A novel framework to evaluate the impact of climate change on groundwater resources in Sweden, funded by The Swedish Research Council Formas (Formas, 2016-00513). The overarching objective of this research is to significantly improve understanding of groundwater responses to the combined impact of climate change and human activity, as well as to provide stakeholders, end-users and scientists with tools needed to analyse past and ongoing changes, whilst predicting future ones.

The successful candidate's tasks will include analysis of large data sets of geological, hydrological, hydrochemical, climatic and geographic data with the aim to describe and explain dependencies between structure and behavior of groundwater systems. A main focus will be on the categorization of geological and geographic information with the aim to derive a typology of hydrogeological systems. This will be carried out on existing data. Fieldwork and laboratory experiments will only be carried out occasionally. Teaching and administrative work are not mandatory but can be added if the successful candidate whishes. Teaching and/or course administration extend the contract correspondingly (up to one year on top of the four years of Ph.D. education, see below).

Eligibility

The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level or at least 240 university credits (ECTS or equivalent), of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in another way acquired similar knowledge.
Only applicants who are admitted to the postgraduate level and the PhD program at the Dep. of Earth Sciences may be hired. Upon appointment, the degree of ability to successfully complete the PhD program must first be evaluated.

Assessment

We are looking for candidates with an educational background in earth or environmental sciences or civil or environmental engineering with a focus on water resources and hydrology/hydrogeology. Documented experience (university level courses, theses, professional practice, publications, etc., proven by respective transcripts, certificates, references) in as many of the following fields as possible are considered valuable: 1) hydrogeology and hydrology, 2) Statistics (multivariate analysis), 3) Geographic information systems, 4) Hydro-geo-chemistry, and 5) Regional Geology of Sweden. The task requires good computer skills in general; programming skills for the management and analysis of large data sets are advantageous. Good proficiency in spoken and written Swedish (alternative Danish or Norwegian) and English is required.

The application should contain a CV and a cover letter of maximum one page which describes the applicants interest in the announced position and how she/he can contribute to the objectives of the research group. Contact details of at least two references should be provided.
