The KKS SafeSmart Synergy project - Safety of Connected Intelligent Vehicles in Smart Cities - aims at developing technical advances enabling automated driving in challenging urban scenarios. The advertised Ph.D. position involves interdisciplinary research spanning both the field of Wireless Communication Networks, and the field of Motion Control of Autonomous vehicles. The scientific questions shall revolve around how to steer autonomous vehicles at road intersections, using sensor data as well as the data packets exchanged with other vehicles and the traffic infrastructure.

The work shall require versatility as it involves: (i) Mathematical analysis, (ii) Practical design, (iii) Software implementation, (iv) Interfacing with the Testing team, and (v) Interfacing with the Sensing team. One of the main challenges is to keep system testability in mind and jointly design: (A) MAC and Link layer protocols in the vehicular communication networks, and (B) Motion control algorithms in the autonomous vehicles.
