Job description
Today legumes receive, with all right, great attention. Epidemiologic studies show that a diet rich in legumes is associated with reduced risk for major non-communicable diseases. While a few intervention studies showed health-protective effects of legume foods, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The PhD scholarship is part of a multidisciplinary research project in collaboration with scientists from several Swedish universities entitled Health-promoting legumes - assessment of metabolic effects and identification of dietary biomarkers of legume intake using metabolomics and microbiomics. The project aims to assess the metabolic effects of legume-based foods underpinning an enhanced intake of legumes in the population for improved health.
The PhD student will be expected to use advanced statistical methods and analytical techniques, e.g. NMR and LCMSMS, for evaluating with a metabolomics approach the health effects of a diet high in legumes. The effects of regular legume consumption on the gut microbiota composition will also be studied. The research will involve a long-term intervention study, evaluation of epidemiological data and discovery of biomarkers for legume intake.
The research will be conducted within a 4 year multidisciplinary project collaboration with scientists from Umeå University, Lund university and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, and will involve short-term stays at these premises.
