Position profile
Research in the field of Chemistry at Lnu is performed within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The Bioorganic & Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory (BBCL) is based within the Department of Chemistry & Biomedical Sciences at Linnaeus University. The group is an integral part of the Linnaeus University Centre for Biomaterial Chemistry and is engaged in a series of international and national level collaborations including two current EU-funded consortia and projects with support of the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Knowledge Foundation and various industrial partners. We seek a PhD student to join us in this diverse and internationally recognized environment.
Description of position
The project is a part of long-term interdisciplinary effort to develop biomimetic materials and to explore their establishment in a range of applications areas. Of particular interest is their use in catalysis, in (bio)sensing and as (bio)materials for use in various therapeutic applications. The specific aims of this PhD project will be to: 1. Investigate new strategies for the atom-economical construction of C-C and analogous bonds through C-H activation, 2. To incorporate these reaction systems into nano-structured materials, ultimately for use in conjunction with micro-fluidics systems. The work will be performed mainly in Kalmar though visits to labs of collaborators is expected. More specifically, the successful candidate shall help drive our involvement in the development of functional materials through establishing novel strategies for C-H activation, in particular using transition metal-centered strategies, initially, with rhodium- and cobalt-focused of particular interest. Involvement in teaching or other department-related activities may be possible, up to 20%.
Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a Master degree (240hp/240ECTS) in Chemistry or a subject area with a major focus of direct relevance for the project. Previous, documented experience of research in organic synthesis, and purification and characterization of products is essential for the position, as is a good working knowledge of the English language. Furthermore, sound understanding of the principles of C-H activation strategies and molecular imprinting is of importance for the position. Basic prerequisites are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen), Chapter 5 and 7.
Assessment criteria:
Priority will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
• Documented track-record of research in the field of synthetic organic chemistry
• Documented experience in the development or use of C-H activation reactions
In the overall assessment, particular importance is placed on the candidate's potential for a successful career in academia.
Placement city: Kalmar
Scope of appointment: The vacancy is a fully funded full-time four years appointment with the objective to obtain a PhD. (First period of employment lasts 12 months)
