Being the sixth largest university in Sweden, Linnaeus University has established a computer science department with international reputation. The Department of Computer Science currently has more than 50 faculty members, who have conducted research in major areas of computer science such as software engineering, visualization and visual analytics, embedded systems, adaptive systems, networks, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. Our mission is to educate the next generation computer scientists to bring about scientific and technological innovations to the nation and to the world.

Adopted in: The research of the PhD student will concentrate on cyber-physical systems and cyber-physical systems security, and the target application domain is smart power system.

Type of employment: The employment as a doctoral student is limited according to chapter 5, § 7 of the Higer Education Ordinance. The total employment period may not be longer than the equivalent full-time postgraduate studies of four years.

Location: Växjö

Work description

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) study the close interaction and the deep integration between the cyber computational components and the physical components that could involve energy systems, mechanical systems, human activities and surrounding environment. CPS itself is a highly interdisciplinary research field, and this position has the specific focus on studying the security, reliability, and performance issues in the link between the information system and the power system in a smart power CPS. In details, the research topics cover residential homes, commercial buildings, and other civil infrastructures in a smart power CPS, which becomes more and more intelligent thanks to the rapid advancement of various cyber technologies. Through integrating advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence technologies, smart homes, buildings, and power distribution systems can be built to improve quality, reliability, and security, and to reduce energy and monetary costs. However, the design, implementation and operation of the smart power CPS still face many challenges that arise from the rapid increase of functional complexity, the significant uncertainty from physical environment and human activities, the increasing deployment of distributed and networked architecture, and the stringent requirements on security, safety, and reliability. The PhD student is expected to conduct the state-of-the-art research for building secure and efficient smart homes, buildings, and power distribution system in a smart power CPS.

According to the Higher Education Ordinance a person appointed to a doctoral studentship should primarily devote himself/herself to his/her own studies. An appointee may, however, work to a limited extent with education, research, artistic development, and administration.
