Doctoral Student - AI-Assisted Design of Bioinspired Heat Exchangers for Aviation

We are looking for a motivated doctoral student who wants to explore how generative AI can transform the design of advanced heat exchangers for future aircraft propulsion systems.

About the position
The PhD position is part of a national project supported by VINNOVA under the Advanced Digitalization - Industrial Innovation call. The research will focus on developing and implementing generative AI methods for creating innovative heat-exchanger geometries with high efficiency and sustainability in mind.

You will use open-source machine learning software provided by Meta AI and OpenAI, deployed on state-of-the-art Nvidia AI workstations. The work will involve:

• Creating geometry generation and flow analysis models, as well as performing experimental validations.
• Training an AI agent using both generated data and engineers' evaluations of design trials.
• Deploying the trained model in increasingly complex representative environments for generative design activities.

You will collaborate closely with design engineers and the AI interest group at GKN Aerospace AB, who will provide guidance on AI, heat exchanger design, and contextual knowledge for AI training.

About us
The Turbomachinery and Aeroacoustics research group consists of two professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, three researchers, and ten PhD students. We are part of the Fluid Dynamics Division at Chalmers, and our work spans from novel aircraft propulsion concepts to the aerothermal design of turbomachinery components and heat exchangers.
We have a strong European network, collaborating with major aircraft engine OEMs and leading universities through several EU aviation projects.

About the research project
The project aims to develop machine learning methods for geometry generation of topologically complex, continuous surface components for air vehicles and their propulsion systems. Specifically, it will apply these methods to the aerodynamic and mechanical design of bioinspired heat exchangers, taking inspiration from natural structures such as bird lungs. The goal is to achieve higher power density and thermal efficiency with low pressure drop, essential for future engines powered by sustainable energy sources like biofuels, synthetic fuels, hydrogen, or electric power.

Who we are looking for
We are seeking a candidate with a Master's degree (120 credits) or a Magister's degree (60 credits) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry, with a strong focus on heat and fluid flow phenomena.

Experience in turbulence modelling, data-driven methods, and additive manufacturing is considered an advantage. You should also have programming experience, preferably in Python, and demonstrate good command of English, both spoken and written.

What you will do

• Design, analyse, and test bioinspired compact heat exchangers.
• Develop a deep reinforcement learning network to train an AI agent on 3D design and manufacturing of bioinspired structures.
• Integrate engineering expertise in a human-in-the-loop framework to incorporate domain-specific knowledge.
• Deploy the AI agent for generative design and production activities of bioinspired heat exchangers.

Contract terms

• The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
• The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
• Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

• As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
• Read more about Sweden's generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
