The department carries out high quality research and under- and postgraduate education on a high international level and collaborates with society and industry to develop a bio-based economy where forest biomaterials are an important resource. The major focus in Umeå lies on value chains in the bio-based industry, where different components of forest biomaterials are collected, characterized, separated, modified / processed, used and re-used cost-effectively for different purposes while forest ecosystem services are managed sustainably. In Uppsala, the focus lies on wood science and technology with research and education on wood materials from nano to macro levels, wood adhesives and composites, and with accredited testing of wood products and treatments for the market.

Postgraduate study subject: Wood science
Background and goals:
Despite the widely recognised and urgent need to substitute fossil raw materials
with renewables, under-developed biomass processing methods and poor understanding of the multiple benefits of novel applications currently restrict the implementation of sustainable fibre value chains. Every step in the novel biobased fibre value chains needs to be optimised, from cultivation practices, industrial processes, and business models. While hemp and woody biomass represent well-established biomass types for biorefineries, other underexploited species such as thistle, cattail and common reed could add to the crop selection and biomass production potential. Novel fibre substrates can thus be derived to replace conventional materials and reduce the pressure to use woody biomass to the extent that the carbon sink of forested land is put at risk. The scientific knowledge on the properties of such underexploited biomass types must be completed as a prerequisite for their industrial acceptance and further development.
Work and duties:
The PhD thesis is part of a Horizon Europe project with aim to increase the comprehensive potential of fibres from unexploited feedstock sources for novel raw material value chains and more green processes in manufacturing industries. The specific objectives are to: i) elucide the effect of processing methods on the quality of primary and secondary fibrous biomass materials for a variety of industrial products; ii) verify the feasibility of using fibres from selected biomass sources in various products, such as automotive composites, concrete, and insulation boards. Biomass materials will be characterised in terms of morphological, ultrastructural, mechanical, hygroscopic and chemical properties. Performance and workability of prototypes of all products will be compared with commercial products to estimate the replacing potential of fossil-based counterparts. Collaboration with leading European institutes and companies along the value chain of fibre products is envisaged. The doctoral student combines both PhD-courses and practical research work. Lecturing and course management duties up to 20% of work time in the subject wood science and technology may be possible, with corresponding prolongation of employment time if needed.
Qualifications:
Students with a master's degree in wood technology, material science, engineering, biology and plant science, forestry or other relevant subject are eligible to apply for this position. Experience of working with biomass and biorefineries are an advantage as well as knowledge or interest on statistical and machine learning techniques. Previous research experience on subjects related to the position is a merit. Fluent English language, both in writing and speaking is required. Much emphasis in the evaluation of applications is placed on analytical and problem-solving capacity, motivation and ability to collaborate as well as work individually. Experiences of academic publication is seen as a merit.
Place of work:
Uppsala
Form of employment:
Temporary employment, 4 years
Extent:
100%
