At the Department of Biosystems and Technology, we explore interactions between soil, plants, animals, environment, climate and humans in systems for sustainable production of food and renewable raw materials. Our teaching and research activities concern questions about sustainable and efficient use of limited resources for production in greenhouses, on agricultural land and in farm buildings. Research subject: Technology
Description:
The PhD work aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the climate impact mitigation and resource use efficiency associated with rooftop greenhouses (RTGs) for urban food production.
The project will focus on developing functional models for a better understanding of the interplay between the host building and the RTG, including energy analysis, developing data inventories for embodied energy of building materials and vegetable production systems, and assessing the environmental impact of alternative vegetable production systems. The research aims to form a broadened knowledge base, supporting policy recommendations addressing key questions related to material choices, environmental impact, and productivity of RTGs and thereby contributing to sustainable solutions fostering resilient urban food systems.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who has an MSc or MEng in systems analysis, building science or physics, engineering or other areas of educations related to applied fields where technology and biology are linked, preferably with a systems analysis component in the curricula. Candidates should have a sound understanding of or a clear interest in building engineering, urban agriculture, horticulture or green technology. The candidate should be able to work autonomously as well as collaborate with people within and outside the university and have good communication skills, including the ability to write well in English.
Merits:
• Experience in prior systems analysis (LCA or techno-economic assessment, dynamic energy simulations in buildings)
• Elaborated skills in using relevant software (LCA and LCA database software, dynamic light and energy simulations)
• Relevant practical and technical experience with e.g. fluid based growing systems such as aquaponics, hydroponics, aeroponics, algae systems or similar.
• An interdisciplinary approach and interest, and preferably experience of earlier research work.
Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.
