Peace and Development Research at the University of Gothenburg is a leading site of interdisciplinary enquiry. The research environment consists of ca 50 researchers using a broad range of approaches to investigate various themes in peace and development in different regions of the world. These themes include, but are not limited to, conflicts, security, gender, human rights, global political economy, migration, regional and global governance, and resistance.
Peace and Development Research at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, announces a doctoral position within the Swedish Research Council financed research project "The essential dilemmas of long-term peacebuilding: the cases of Cambodia and Mozambique". The project aims to address the long-term effects of intensive peacebuilding, with a view to identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities of the implementation of liberal peacebuilding. The project will interrogate the trajectory of peacebuilding through an in-depth historical and a contemporary analysis of to well-documented and "successful" cases. Our central research problem is: What, given the long trajectory of peacebuilding initiatives and their implementation, does not work and why in Cambodia and Mozambique? There is curiously similar development and timing in the two cases. In assessing this we will seek to identify the provenance of the recent tensions in both cases. Particular research questions focus on long-term dilemmas of peacebuilding; the dynamics of ex/inclusion; the significance of grounding peace with the population; and, the possibility of an adaptive peacebuilding. The PhD student will be tasked to work on the case study of Mozambique.
