Department of Global Political Studies (GPS)
The Department of Global Political Studies is a multidisciplinary research and educational environment consisting of eight subjects: European Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Gender Studies, International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), International Relations, Caucasus Studies, Human Rights, and Political Science. The Department's educational programmes and research focus on global processes of change and their impact on societies and individuals. Our research environment also includes MIM (Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare) and the research platforms RUCARR (Russia and the Caucasus Regional Research), CFM (Collaborative Future-Making) and REDEM (Rethinking Democracy).
Doctoral programme in International Migration and Ethnic relations (IMER)
Scholars within IMER study, among other subjects, the national, regional, international and global causes and effects of migration in both the society of origin and destination on a structural, institutional, collective, and individual level.
IMER is an inherently multi- and interdisciplinary subject, in which for instance sociology, political science, cultural geography, anthropology, economic history, economics, social work, history, ethnology, religious studies, gender studies, and cultural studies are represented.
The goal of the programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the doctoral student to conduct research independently and contribute to the development of knowledge within the chosen subject area. The doctoral programme comprises 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies), of which 60 credits are from courses. It is completed when the doctoral student publicly defends his/her printed doctoral dissertation (180 credits).
Employment as a doctoral student
Those employed as doctoral students will mainly carry out their own postgraduate studies (their work being located at Malmö University). Departmental duties of up to 20% may be included. The regulations regarding employment as a doctoral student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 5 Sections 1-7).
Eligibility requirements
The general requirements for third-cycle (doctoral) education are:
• received a second-cycle (masters) higher education degree;
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle; or
• in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.
Specific requirements
• A second-cycle degree in IMER or in another subject relevant to IMER.
• Ability to express oneself well in written and spoken English is essential.
Assessment criteria
When selecting between applicants for vacant positions, the ability to complete postgraduate education is assessed (Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 7 Section 5).
The assessment is based on the basic and special eligibility requirements (see above). Other important indicators of the ability to complete postgraduate education are the applicant's second-cycle (masters) thesis, scientific publications, other publications, and a research plan. The assessment of the research plan is based on its feasibility, originality and relevance to IMER. The research plan should have a clear, well expressed and motivated methodology. We encourage applicants with different kinds of theoretical and methodological approaches.
The assessment is also based on the ability to express oneself well in written and spoken English.
