We are looking for a Director, Operations, Portfolio & Alliances to join our AI & Analytics team within AstraZeneca's R&D Data Science and AI group. Here is where the magic happens in applying sophisticated algorithms and techniques to some of the hardest problems in the discovery and development of new medicines. The team demonstrates a blend of scientific, problem solving, and quantitative skills to develop and deliver pioneering methods addressing critical problems in AstraZeneca's R&D environment. Our team of machine learning research scientists, data scientists and therapy area scientists work together allowing them to be close to the questions that matter and work on a broad range of the most promising opportunities quickly.

What you'll do
This leadership role is a member of the AI&A leadership team and will provide leadership across several areas setting up, overseeing and coordinating multiple key external alliances in the data & analytics arena on behalf of R&D. You will ensure effective day-to-day running of the organisation and management of the overall portfolio of work, ensuring it is resourced effectively. You will lead the development of functional strategy, the setting and tracking of associated objectives, and will lead the process of horizon scanning for new innovations and bringing those in to the organisation. In this position you will act as the Chief of Staff to the VP of AI&A and oversee department wide support teams including engineering, visual analytics, engagement and delivery.

* Lead, manage and develop a diverse team of specialists who can drive forward the operations, portfolio & alliances agenda.
* Contribute to strategy, vision and objectives for the function as part of the AI&A leadership team.
* Serve on Data Science & AI governance groups and technical/decision making bodies as required.
* Own and coordinate multiple large alliances, that support the R&D data science & AI objectives.
* Manage the business portfolio of the AI&A function, including resourcing, issue tracking, risk management, prioritization.
* Ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the AI&A function, including areas such as hiring and on-boarding, FTE and budget tracking and communications (in collaboration with the relevant experts in those areas).
* Fulfil Chief of Staff accountabilities for the VP of AI&A, including ensuring the smooth running of leadership team meetings, tracking & resolution of actions.
* Conduct horizon scanning campaigns to capture the latest external developments & innovations, for dissemination and/or bringing in-house.
* Provide project management for cross-R&D AI&A initiatives.
* Oversee the Engineering & Visual Analytics department.

Essential for the role

* MSc degree in a quantitative science (such as information sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering).
* Track record of operational leadership for large organisations and/or complex programme. Experience with alliance management.
* Experience in successful strategy creation & execution.
* Ability to build strong relationships with senior stakeholders.
* Travel willingness and ability to travel domestically & internationally.
* Resilience - ability to overcome and motivate others in the face of a changing environment.
* A research program demonstrated by one or more journal and conference publications in prestigious venues.

Desirable for the role

* PhD degree in computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
* >3 years managerial experience.
* >3 years experience in pharma or other life sciences businesses.
* Experience building and deploying ML models.
* Completion of ML Competitions.
