In the Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) Department, we support and drive all in vivo studies at the Gothenburg site in addition to working collaboratively with colleagues in UK and US LAS facilities and with numerous other research groups across the company. We care for the animals, conduct studies to evaluate efficacy and pharmacokinetics, confirm target engagement, and examine drug safety. We support and collaborate with scientists generating predictive animal models for in depth human disease and toxicology understanding and development of new GEMs models using precise genome engineering technologies. Our research facilities are outstanding and include state of the art small and large animal housing and purpose specific research laboratories including surgical and imaging technologies.
As Head of LAS Gothenburg, you will lead a team of 45 in vivo scientists responsible for conducting experimental studies and the care and welfare of laboratory animals. You will participate in global leadership teams and work streams to develop best practices and drive the quality of the animal research program based upon high-caliber science and current literature.
The role requires the ability to engage with therapeutic area colleagues including project planning and influencing project plans and strategies. Your main responsibilities will include oversight of the animal care and use program including budgetary oversight, staff management, strategic planning for new skills and technology developments, scientific leadership and publication. In addition you will ensure compliance with the internal AZ bioethics policy along with external regulations and AAALAC policies.
Essential Requirements
University degree in veterinary medicine or related field.
Must understand mammalian models of cardiovascular and respiratory disease.
In vivo skills in a variety of animal species
Experience with production and maintenance of genetically modified animal models
Experience in experimental design and scientific publication
Laboratory animal science specialty certification
Leadership skills and experience in managing staff
Desirable Requirements
A veterinary PhD or other relevant PhD degree
Knowledge of animal models within some of AstraZeneca Gothenburg's core therapeutic areas, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Kidney or Metabolic disease.
Experience in AAALAC accreditation process and animal welfare ethical review bodies.
