Volvo Cars is looking for an inspirational leader with outstanding exterior design expertise who will employ a visionary approach to developing the Volvo Cars Exterior Lighting and Component strategy with consistency over future years. The goal is to deliver products that redefine core well-being, tasteful luxury and long-term quality in the premium market. The design should exemplify intelligent, subtle and timeless good taste.
The successful candidate will be based in the Gothenburg studio but also have an overview of activities at Volvo Cars' other studios in China and California. The position will be responsible for Exterior Lighting and Components of all Volvo Car passenger vehicle programs and report directly to the Vice President of Exterior Design.
What you will do
As our Director for Exterior lighting and component you will have the responsibility to deliver outstanding Volvo Lighting and Component design work. You will lead the design team to translate great exterior designs into outstanding proposals and class leading products. In this, you will work closely with design managers, senior designers, designers and their teams. As our next director you will develop, present and sell in creative exterior designs in the area of lighting systems and exterior components at the highest level that reinvigorates the Volvo brand and carries it forward. You will also:
* Develop strong relationships with adjacent Volvo engineering and marketing disciplines in order to secure their commitment to our new exterior design vision.
* Instil an atmosphere of energetic creativity across all Volvo Design studios that ensures delivery of exceptional exterior design.
* Develop strong relationships with key suppliers and Volvo plant based personnel at all levels to ensure that class-leading design is delivered in production.
* Develop strong relationships with academic institutions to identify and develop new talent as well as new ideas.
* Work across disciplines within design to develop strategies, which will appeal to new thoughtful and tech savvy customers.
Do you fit the profile?
You have experience in all design development phases from advanced to production as well as an education in Design. Further you have a deep understanding') understanding of production methods for automotive lighting systems, components (grilles, accessories). To fit this role you need to have knowledge of legal and technical requirements for exterior lighting. To conclude the requirements for this role will also be:
* Experience from working in different parts of the world and ability to demonstrate expertise in design leadership.
* An excellent knowledge of emerging technologies and competitive design trends.
* Demonstrable expertise in the use of creative tools and processes (classic and/or digital).
* Able to articulate a clear understanding of the Volvo Car brand and its DNA.
* Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams; exterior, UX, design engineering, digital and clay modelling.

To succeed in this role you need have a clear design philosophy and you are able to articulate it in an inspirational fashion. Since you have a lot of contact with different stakeholders it is important that you have good communication skills. In order for you to fully enjoy this job you have to be able to demonstrate a strong aesthetic sense. Further you need to engender passion to those around you as well as have high energy levels, absorb pressure and get results. You also need to have integrity, be open-minded and proven ability to build transdisciplinary design teams; cultivating a modern and nimble approach to product development. To conclude you have a keen awareness of "cutting edge" technical developments that influence design.
