IMED Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA), AstraZeneca R&D, Gothenburg, Sweden, seek to recruit a Director Level Team Leader, New Modality Chemistry, to the Department of Medicinal Chemistry.

The Arena

The Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity IMED develops novel drugs for the treatment of conditions such as asthma and COPD. The new modalities chemistry team supports the RIA drug discovery programs by leading our efforts in new modality based drug discovery, including design and synthesis of peptides and oligonucleotides. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists from the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments to advance the RIA new modality project pipeline.

Job description:

The Director New Modality Chemistry is a PhD level scientist with significant and relevant experience from pharmaceutical drug discovery focused on peptide and/or nucleotide based drug discovery with a track-record of influence on multiple projects across the drug discovery value chain. The Director demonstrate significant impact on multiple projects across and beyond the RIA IMED new modality portfolio. Continuously influences the new modality community globally within AZ as well as AZ external. Responsible for the build and strategic implementation of the new modality platform at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department. Through the team, contribute to the design and synthesis of peptides/nucleotides by applying state of the art knowledge. Coaches and supports scientists within RIA by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert advice and interpretation of complex data. Will be an authority in peptide/nucleotide chemistry and make significant contributions to define and deliver goals for individual projects or segments of the RIA new modality project portfolio.

May lead projects or strategic initiatives at the RIA IMED or at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department. Initiates, identifies and drives strategic collaborations and publication opportunities. Continuously publish and present results from own scientific work.

As team leader at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department responsible for day-to-day staff management.

The jobholder has a scientific background with strong skills in written and verbal communication. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Integrated part of the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Departments leadership with a focus on leading the development of the strategic vision for the future new modality capability build at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department.
Actively impact the RIA IMED strategy, research board and projects ensuring that state of the art science in drug discovery is being applied supporting the new modality portfolio
Proactively and visibly engage with and influence other AZ new modality hubs and externally. Maintain and develop key cross functional interaction e.g. Pharmaceutical Science

Education:
PhD in chemistry or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline with significant, multiple years, experience from drug discovery focused on peptide/nucleotide chemistry. Documented experience of scientific and staff leadership within peptide/nucleotide chemistry applied to medicinal chemistry drug discovery.

Requirements and Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable, ability to prioritise workload and manage challenging staff situations.
In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of peptide/nucleotide chemistry including design, synthesis and data analysis proven by track record of project deliveries, publications and external presentations
Experienced from the use and project application of modern analytical, biophysical, structural chemistry and computational techniques used to progress peptide and nucleotide based projects
Up-to-date with recent developments in areas relevant to peptide/nucleotide based medicinal chemistry drug discovery e.g. pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, safety, formulation, and screening approaches
A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
Excellent communication and influencing skills
Knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
A proven track record of delivering tasks in a timely manner
