Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.

Description:

The MAX IV storage rings are state-of-the-art electron accelerators that aim to deliver high brightness synchrotron radiation to visiting scientists.

There are two rings at the MAX IV facility, at different electron energies; one at 3 GeV and one at 1.5 GeV. They are both highly complex machines that make use of a large number of components covering a wide range of functions. Examples include high-precision electromagnets, ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) systems for the beam chamber, RF transmitters and cavities to compensate for the beam power loss, as well as high precision diagnostics to measure the beam location. While the facility was inaugurated in June 2016 and the 3 GeV ring has begun servicing users, there are still several accelerator subsystems in commissioning. These need to be fully calibrated and integrated in the control system.

The accelerator control system itself is based on TANGO, used in a number of European accelerator laboratories. This provides a common platform on which to communicate with the diverse range of hardware. The physicists and operators then make use of high-level applications and scripted routines to perform measurements and calibrations. For this, MATLAB and Python are most commonly used. In particular, the MATLAB Middle Layer package developed at Advanced Light Source (ALS) and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) has seen extensive use.

This summer project will consist of:

- Development and testing of high-level software tools for the 3 GeV storage ring
- Development and testing of high-level software tools for the 1.5 GeV storage ring
- Participation in machine commissioning shifts

Required competences include:

- Solid experience with the MATLAB scripting environment
- Must have completed three years of study in Engineering Physics or equivalent study program (>180 academic points)
- Successful completion of course "EIT105F - Fundamentals on Accelerator Physics"
- Successful completion of course "MAXM05 - Accelerators and Free Electron Lasers"

There is a possibility for project extension during a period in Autumn, as a number of routines and tools will require the accelerators to be up and running in order to fully test them.

We kindly decline all sales and marketing contacts.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
