ESD-35054

The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now in search of a Detector Electronics Engineer for the Detector Group, which is a part of the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project Division.

Our Division provides the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The Detector Group routinely collaborates with partners worldwide to provide novel neutron detectors to the NSS, meeting challenging requirements with diverse technologies, many adopted from other disciplines. The Technical Section of the Detector Group is responsible for the development and construction of detector technologies. The section consists of electrical and mechanical engineers and technicians, and production, workshop, and support technicians. It is strongly supported by Detector Scientists and Researchers within the Detector Group. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to visit collaborating partners and neutron centers worldwide.

Among the responsibilities of the position are:

• To carry out electronics design associated with detector development, including drawing, simulating, prototyping, iterating, and documenting.
• To follow best practices, safety directives, and the code of professional conduct.
• To document all efforts thoroughly.
• To develop and nurture networks of suppliers, scientific collaborators, and in-kind partners.
• To conceive, configure, design, procure, assemble, test, evaluate, iterate, fabricate, deploy, calibrate, and commission detector systems.

This is a full-time, three-year assignment based in Lund, Sweden, and we need someone who can start as soon as practically possible.

About you:

The successful candidate possesses the following knowledge, skills and competences:

• A Master's or a Bachelor's degree in electronic engineering.
• A few years of relevant work experience with circuit design, testing FPGAs, and designing analog circuits.
• Relevant work experience with Altium Designer and with programing complex FPGA systems using VHDL.
• Programming and computing skills will be considered a plus (C and related, optionally Python).

As a person you are self-motivated, with the ability to work proactively both unsupervised but also as a part of a diverse interdisciplinary team. You combine a hands-on approach with an ability to listen, enabling you to deliver on schedule and meeting deadlines. The ability to multitask while still paying attention to detail comes naturally to you. You enjoy new challenges and routinely develop novel solutions.

Experience from working in an international environment is essential, and you feel comfortable working with people from different backgrounds. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as it is the working language at ESS. Knowledge of another European language would be advantageous.

What can we offer?

• Aside from the chance to work at a truly unique Big Science project, you can also expect:
• An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
• A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.A challenging, exciting and fast-paced work environment.
• Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
• 30 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
• Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
• Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.

Interested? We sure hope so.
