Would you like to help create a better everyday life for the many people by developing affordable products and solutions for homes around the world? At IKEA of Sweden in Älmhult, that's exactly what they do. This is where the IKEA product range is developed and made available to stores and customers across the globe.
Mechanical Design plays a key role in their product development-ensuring robust construction, packaging efficiency, ease of assembly, and customer satisfaction. Smart solutions and good design shape their customers' perceptions of quality.
Within the Bedroom Furniture Range Area, they are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join one of their Storage Solitaires teams. In this role, you will be part of a cross-functional product development team with end-to-end responsibility for mechanical design. You will ensure that their products are ready for production and provide a great experience for customers when they assemble them at home.
You will work closely with stakeholders throughout the value chain to find optimal constructions that balance cost, customer needs, and sustainability.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will:
• Develop technical product designs and solutions that meet product requirements, business goals, and customer needs.
• Contribute to the exploration and implementation of new materials and innovations.
• Apply IKEA standard materials, solutions, and platforms to drive cost efficiency and support sustainability targets.
• Collaborate with development partners, designers, and manufacturers to ensure design specifications are met.
• Evaluate constructions through calculations and simulations, working with our in-house FEA engineers prior to prototype testing.
• Identify and mitigate product risks to ensure safe, high-performing products.
• Focus on both supplier and customer perspectives-designing for manufacturing and easy customer assembly.
• Create, document, and maintain accurate digital 3D models and 2D drawings, including all relevant dimensions and tolerances, in line with IKEA CAD standards.
• Produce technical documentation such as assembly instructions, assembly time estimates, bills of components, and other relevant specifications.
• Break down product constructions into relevant part structures for development and production.
Qualifications
Ikea is looking for a collaborative team player who is passionate about creating the best possible product for customers-at the right price, with the right quality, and with a strong focus on sustainability. You are structured, fact-based in your decision-making, and able to prioritize and share insights to support the business.
Must have:
• A higher technical education or university degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience), with solid knowledge of material science, FEM analysis, and mechanical design.
• Proficiency in using CAD software and product lifecycle management tools such as SolidWorks and PTC Windchill.
Nice to have:
• A few years of experience in product development.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical design, 3D modeling, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), simulation, and drawing techniques
Strong communication skills and the ability to drive your own work are highly valued. To succeed in this role, you'll need both analytical and creative abilities, and the capability to turn knowledge and ideas into innovative technical product solutions.
