hela Sverige The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Deputy Technical Director. The ESS Machine Directorate is responsible for delivery of the ESS Accelerator, Target and Integrated Control Systems. The Directorate also manages the ESS Systems Engineering and Integration & Design Support Division and will evolve to support technical infrastructure during Operations.

Description of main responsibilities
Duties of the Deputy Technical Director will include, but not be restricted to:
• Support the Technical Director in his responsibilities for the performance goals, scope, cost, schedule and deliverables of the Machine Directorate
• Support the Technical Director in managing the staff and budget of the directorate
• Serve in the ESS Technical Board, Change Control Board and Machine Management Team
• Serve as "Operations Manager" and as such be responsible for coordinating commissioning and eventual operation of the neutron source and its technical infrastructure
• Together with the Technical Director direct, coordinate and develop the operational aspects within the Directorate to appropriately support the ESS Construction Project
• Develop and implement long-term strategies and provide medium-term strategic direction within the Directorate
• Ensure that the Directorate achieves its objectives and complies with all relevant regulations and laws
• Contribute to the development of policies in compliance with overall objectives, strategies and plans
• Attend ESS management meetings [e.g. ESS Management Team (EMT)] as well as meetings with the governance (e.g. Council) on behalf of the Technical Director when the Technical Director is absent
Qualifications
• The successful candidate will have an advanced university degree in engineering, physics or relevant discipline, in combination with a substantial track record in big science projects and construction management of accelerator and/or target station related areas or similar
• Experience with the operation of a scientific facility
• Knowledge of principles and practices across key activity areas of scientific research laboratories
• Experience working in collaboration with partner institutions to realize in-kind deliverable is highly desirable
• The position requires a leader who makes clear and prompt decisions, initiates and generates activity and takes responsibility for actions, projects and people. The ability to provide others with a clear direction, delegate work appropriately and uphold ethics and values will also be of great importance
• Excellent networking and interpersonal skills required, as well as demonstrated financial awareness and ability to add value through creative solutions to complex problems. Seeking opportunities for organizational goals is also a key success factor
• Experience in working in an international environment is essential, as are excellent communication skills and the ability to interact productively with the staff in the ESS Directorates
• You must be fluent in written and spoken English
Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. Start date on a mutually agreed date, but preferable as soon as possible.
