The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Deputy Group Leader.

Description of directorate/division
As Deputy Group Leader you will join the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division, responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities. The Integrated Control System monitors and controls most of the operational aspects. We cover a wide range of sensing, control, automation, safety, computing and software technologies and their applications. The hardware scope consists of a mixture from entirely in-house hardware development, through community-style development to adaption and configuration of off-the shelf commercial systems.

Description of main responsibilities

• Organizing design reviews of the different systems the group is responsible for (around 40 systems in total) and organize follow up activities accordingly
• Organize trainings according to required technical expertise in alignment with project and line managers
• Help in constantly improving and extending performance and skill sets by analyzing and evaluating staff performance
• Organize team-building activities
• Help in preparing documentation as required for annual reviews, operations reviews
• Coordinating work related to SSM activities for Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems (SSM is the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority)
• Follow up closely the development of Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems and analyze for potential synergies
• Organize and coordinate documentation requirements for Personnel Safety Systems according to the IEC 61508 standard together with in house staff and external resources

Qualifications

• Masters degree or equivalent in electronics, mathematics, or physics
• Several years of experience in the design, development and operation of safety- or mission-critical systems based on PLC or FPGA technology
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential
• Experience in both personnel management and project management
• Experience in working with people from diverse fields, and a strong ability to sense and guide team dynamics as well as a high level of empathy is mandatory
• Experience in creating compliant documentation for safety systems
• Experience in working with safety- or mission-critical systems in an academic research environment is desired
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
