Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

Our Respiratory research is mainly carried out at the dynamic AstraZeneca Research site in Gothenburg, Sweden. However, collaboration is a way of life for us. Collaboration with our AstraZeneca colleagues in Cambridge UK, the MedImmune research units in Gaithersburg and Cambridge, as well as numerous academic institutions and partners around the globe gives us access to a worldwide network of expertise and innovation.

To further strengthen our expertise and capacity in each of these research areas we are currently recruiting world-class scientists to join our department. Are you ready to explore what science can do?

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The RIA Target & Translational Sciences (TTS) department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

This role enables the development and implementation of machine learning algorithms within TTS. The machine learning (ML)/artificial intelligence (AI) Deep Learning Scientist is an expert role accountable for selecting and implementing optimal methods for a given ML task. The individual will also have excellent team working skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively to ensure state of the art AI/ML methods are optimally proven to solve data analytics challenges arising in the department.

Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* Lead the selection of ML/AI methodology for data science projects in the TTS department
* Developing and implementing machine learning algorithms with well-organised and documented code
* Building knowledge of AI/ML methods and capabilities across RIA Data Science
* Evaluate the performance of applicable ML/AI methods and develop actionable recommendations for projects
* Keeping up to date with advances in AI/ML methods with a focus on unsupervised and semi-supervised methods
* Contributing to and leading AI/ML projects for TTS
* Work compliantly and with high ethical standards with patient level data
* Drive innovation and scientific excellence in Bioinformatics/Data Science through internal scientific development and external collaborations
* Ensure AZ scientific visibility by publishing scientific papers and presenting at conferences

Essential Requirements

We believe that you collaborate closely with other teams to drive efficiency and take advantage of knowledge and experiences. With a positive can-do attitude, you are eager to learn in each interaction. Furthermore, you will contribute to a science-driven entrepreneurial and ambitious organization with a hunger for new ideas, innovative ways of working and continuous learning

* Strong quantitative background with a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, or similar
* Broad experience applying AI/ML methods to real-world problems focused on unsupervised or semi-supervised problems
* Deep knowledge of at least one of the following packages: TensorFlow, Keras, Torch
* Working in a Linux environment, with experience of cluster or cloud computing (e.g. AWS or Azure).
* Excellent communication and presentation skills, including experience in communicating across discipline boundaries
* Demonstrable experience of applying ML to data sets that were not specifically curated to benchmark ML algorithms but generated to address an engineering or science question

Desirable Requirements

* Experience in pharmaceutical R&D
* Strong publication record
