The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental monitoring and assessment, consulting, research and education in aquatic ecology with focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has more than 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.
The department is highly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fisheries and ecosystems, and is characterized by intensive collaborations with industry, public agencies and NGO:s. Duties:
You will integrate a team of highly motivated data analysts that are responsible for the estimation of commercial catch data from Swedish fisheries and their delivery to national and international end-users, including ICES stock assessments. The main part of your work will be to develop and implement R-scripts to estimate catch variables such as total discards and numbers-at-length/age for a variety of fisheries and sampling designs. You will also work on improving the quality and dissemination of the fisheries data and be involved in the development and implementation of quality assurance algorithms and automated reports from Swedish fisheries and SLU's sampling programmes. In your tasks you will work closely with other SLU colleagues but also colleagues from other European fisheries institutes. Those collaborations require some field trips and periods of work away from Lysekil.
Qualifications:
We are looking for someone with previous experience in the handling of commercial fisheries data. You are required to hold a BSc or MSc in natural sciences, preferably fisheries or marine biology. You must be proficient in R language being able to write our own scripts and functions, automate report tasks with R-markdown and produce graphs and maps from large data sets. Previous experience with Baltic or North Sea fisheries and previous work at ICES level will be favorably considered. We put great emphasis on your personal qualities and work experience. You should be able to meet tight deadlines, quickly familiarizing yourself with new problem areas, identifying the key issues and make situational judgements. It is important you have a good ability to interact with others and be able to work both independently and in group. In this position you will need to speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of Swedish is not essential but will be favorably considered. If you do not yet speak Swedish, you are expected to start learning the language soon after you start your position.
