MOL0000001A Description The section for Diabetes and Obesity
seeks a highly motivated PhD Researcher to work with drug discovery projects and
target validation in experimental animals. The Arena Within
the Global Discovery Function at AstraZeneca, the Vision of the Cardiovascular
and GastroIntestinal Research Area (RA CVGI) is to "Outperform the competition
by discovering and delivering therapeutic innovations that improve patients'
lives". To facilitate the realisation of this Vision, the RA CVGI is currently
carrying out an extensive reorganisation and the Diabetes and Obesity Disease
Area is expanding. We are seeking a PhD-Researcher who will be part of
an in vivo research team currently comprising seven scientists (PhD and MSc
level). The team's remit is to provide core competence, knowledge and
experimental expertise in in vivo metabolism and nutrient handling to support
all phases of drug discovery in the section for Diabetes and Obesity and
prioritized projects from other disease areas. The Researcher will report to the
Team Leader. The Role The Researcher will actively participate
in and guide in vivo pharmacology work in experimental animals within projects
aimed at prevention of cardiovascular disease via treatment of obesity or the
metabolic disturbances associated with type 2 diabetes. Within the project
setting, the successful applicant will interact with a range of in-house
scientists in other disciplines as well as with external academic groups.
The work will involve development of new methods and application of existing
methods for the quantitative assessment of in vivo glucose and lipid metabolism
at both whole body and individual tissue levels during all phases of ongoing
discovery activities ranging from target identification to extended
documentation of compounds in clinical development. Basic studies of
pathophysiological mechanisms and pharmacodynamic principles constitute an
important component of the responsibilities during certain phases, which are
expected to result in external publications and presentations at international
meetings. Minimum experience/requirements Candidates for this
position should have a PhD or equivalent in physiology/pharmacology, and at
least three years post-doctoral laboratory, hands-on experience in the metabolic
field. Candidates should also have a thorough scientific understanding of
glucose and lipid homeostasis in intact animals, documented by published
peer-reviewed articles. Preferred experience/requirements
Experience in leading project work within industry is an advantage. It is
essential that candidates, in addition to their experimental, communicative and
report writing skills, have a thorough understanding of the regulation of lipid
and glucose metabolism in the intact mammal. More information
