The Programme Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a "Cryogenics Engineer - Plants".
Description of position/department
The Accelerator Division is responsible for the design, construction, installation and commissioning of the ESS accelerator, in collaboration with partner institutions and with other divisions of the ESS.
The Cryogenics and Vacuum Group will work alongside the other groups in the Accelerator Division, at first to define and design the cryogenic and vacuum systems of the ESS as part of the design update process. The CV group will also be responsible for development of equipment for the accelerator as well as installation and commissioning of the cryogenic and vacuum systems during construction of the ESS.
Description of main responsibilities
Working with the CV team, the successful candidate will help develop an ESS-wide cryogenic system, based on three central helium refrigeration and liquefaction facilities that will serve both the superconducting linac system with its spoke resonators and its elliptical cavities as well as the target moderator hydrogen system and the instruments. He or she will communicate with partner institutions and consultants to design the cryogenic system of ESS, including cryoplants, cryogenic distribution and storage, as well as write functional and technical specifications, participate in the procurement of cryogenic equipment, participate in or lead the project for manufacture, installation and commissioning of the cryogenic system of ESS.
Qualifications
• A technical or scientific degree in an appropriate field.
• Between 5 and 10 years experience in cryoplant design and engineering, including distribution systems and storage, project management and procurement of equipment.
• One or more successful large scale development projects.
• Experience with (circular or straight) superconducting accelerators is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to work with others, to communicate efficiently and to take initiative. 
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential. 
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.What ESS can offer

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials - from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
