The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.
Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division for Clinical Research Center, unit for electron microscopy
The unit for electron microscopy (EMil) is a core facility (CF) for Karolinska Institutet (KI) and Stockholm County Council (SLL), located at campus Flemingsberg.
Our aims are to help researchers to solve biological problems by using electron microscopy techniques at highest international level, based on "fee-for-service". The CF is headed by a manager and the work is performed together with two BMA technicians. The CF provides conventional transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy techniques, preparation of specimen, negative staining and immuno-gold preparation. The unit has two TEM and one SEM microscopes and equipment for specimen preparation. The CF is also involved in the clinical diagnostic work at the clinical pathology department at Karolinska University Hospital.
Duties
You will be the contact person at the CF and will guide the researcher how to set up a suitable protocol to perform their experiment, including processing of specimens, microscopy and interpretation of the results. You will be the daily manager of the CF and distribute the work within the laboratory. All work performed at the CF are done according to "good laboratory practice (GLP)" including documentation and clearly written instructions. You are responsible that all clinical specimens for EM diagnostics are processed according to protocols given by Clinical pathology/cytology at Karolinska University Hospital (SLL).
You have the knowledge of handling the TEM and SEM microscope and the different apparatus, including daily operation, supervision and teaching researchers how to use them. You have the knowledge of processing specimen for conventional TEM and SEM analyses, the immuno-gold protocol, negative staining and some basic morphometric analysis. You have basic knowledge of the ultrastructure of organelles in the cell and in different organs. You should be able to know the differences between the normal ultrastructure compared to pathological changes to be able helping researchers to interpret the results.
You will follow the international development of techniques in the field achieved at conferences or in the literature and implement new techniques at the CF.
Bases of assessment
You should have a Ph.D or similar competence as a formal requirement. We require technical knowledge and documented experience in the field of electron microscopy techniques, including processing of specimen, microscopy and in interpretation of the results. Post-doctoral experience with research involving electron microscopy is a merit. Experiences in leading a core facility or a laboratory/research group with similar activities are important. Personal characteristics including documented competences in collaboration, service and communication are highly valued. Experiences following "good laboratory practice (GLP)" is a merit.
