The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a NSS Construction Engineer to the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS) Project.

Description of the project

The NSS Project is managed by the ESS Science Directorate to build the neutron beam facility at the ESS. The scope of the project includes the design and construction of 15 neutron scattering instruments, the neutron transport systems and shielding, and the integration of all systems into an operable neutron science facility. Delivery of ~ 60% of the project scope is managed by In-Kind partners throughout Europe, principally in delivery of the 15 neutron instruments. The NSS project will begin on-site installation of the first neutron instruments in 2019, and will be engaged in installation of instruments and essential infrastructure (such as the neutron bunker) for a period of at least 6 years.

Main responsibilities

The NSS Construction Engineer will be a member of the NSS Project Division, reporting directly to the NSS Project Leader. You will work directly with the NSS Installation Coordinator to facilitate the assembly and installation of neutron instruments, integration with the neutron bunker and connection to services. The role will be focused on interfacing with and coordination of teams engaging in construction activities, managing stakeholders and integration planning for the installation and commissioning phase of the project.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering;
• Minimum 5 years of experience in coordination of large scale mechanical engineering projects;
• Experience in coordination of installations of mechanical or process related equipment is mandatory, including the knowledge of safety standards and work environment legislation;
• Proficient in project planning tools like MS Project or Primavera P6;
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential;
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite;
• Previous experience in the installation and commissioning of neutron beams instruments will be an asset.

To be successful in this position, you need to have excellent planning and engineering skills. You must understand the mechanisms of project work well and be familiar with on-site mechanical assemblies and commissioning. A major success factor lies within your ability to guide installation teams to progress with proper installation sequences, in accordance with the defined installation procedures and with the available resources.

Duration & Location

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
