The European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world's most powerful neutron source when it becomes operational in 2019, providing unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments to study the properties of materials in all their rich diversity. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of scientists and engineers from European countries. ESS will, together with other leading research facilities nearby, such as the planned MAX IV synchrotron in Lund and XFEL and Petra III in Hamburg, as well the rich and innovative academic landscape, make the region a world leader in research infrastructures for the study of materials and life science.
In the coming months, the ESS organisation will move from operating within Lund university to become a shareholding company set-up and owned by the Swedish government, with shares to be acquired by other European governments. Information on the conditions of employment by the new company will be given at, or shortly after, the interview.
Description of position
As a Computer Support Specialist you will provide technical assistance to other employees at ESS. You answer questions or resolve computer problems for users in person, via telephone or from a remote location. Your responsibility is to provide assistance concerning the use of computer hardware and software, including printing, installation, word processing, electronic mail, and operating systems. As the ESS computing environment is dominated by Apple computers running Mac OS X, a thorough understanding of this environment is a necessity as are problem-solving skills. You may also be required to teach people how to use computers/software commonly used here, sometimes, and even to write instruction booklets.
Normally you will work a 40-hour workweek, but critical periods may require you to be "on call" by phone outside of normal hours. Very infrequently, major upgrades might require work at night or on weekends.
Tasks
Oversee the daily performance of computer systems.

Read technical manuals, confer with users, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support.
Refer major hardware or software problems or defective products to vendors or technicians for service.
Develop training materials and procedures, or train users in the proper use of hardware or software.
Qualification
Experience with Macs and OS X as an administrator or power user.
Excellent oral and written English is essential and knowledge of one or more other European languages is an advantage.
Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment is essential.
Extra merit
Certification as an ACSP (Apple Certified Support Professional) or ACTC (Apple Certified Technical Coordinator) would be a very significant advantage.
Experience as a support technician/help-desk operator.
Degree (bachelor) in Computer Science.
Experience with other UNIX-based environments.
Software development knowledge.
Gender balance is important to the ESS - we encourage both men and women to apply.
