The Innovative Medicines (iMed) unit for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease.
CVMD iMed is agnostic to molecular modality and utilize small molecules, peptides, macrocycles, RNA based therapeutics etc which provides a unique opportunity to address scientific questions in an innovative way and creates a stimulating environment for you as a Computational Chemist.
Our pipeline and the research areas we focus on to demonstrate scientific leadership in, are to a large extent driven through collaborations and gives you access to the most recent knowledge and the best experts in the world.
The Medicinal Chemistry Department is a critical player in identifying novel targets and chemical series from both traditional hit finding strategies and also phenotypic screening approaches.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Computational Chemist you will have a profound impact on multiple projects across the CVMD iMed with a focus on early target identification (e.g. phenotypic screen) and lead generation including wide range of new modality chemistry such as stabilized peptides, conjugation chemistry, and oligonucleotides. You will have a key role in modeling, analysis of large datasets, drug design, and will be a significant contributor to project progression. You will also provide discipline based scientific leadership and represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally.
Key Deliveries:
o Impact simultaneously multiple discovery projects (2-3) by efficiently and pro-actively applying a wide variety of computer-aided drug design approaches
o The work will include helping project teams analyse, interpret, and visualize biological data, and communicate these results
o With excellent knowledge of modern computational chemistry and cheminformatics drive areas of scientific improvements for computational chemistry
o Expected to plan, write and publish high quality scientific papers

Essential Requirements
We are seeking a drug hunter with a PhD (or equivalent experience) in computational chemistry, biophysics, or a related field, and preferable industry experience who would like to join our fast-pace multidisciplinary CVMD computational chemistry team. You are expected to have a high degree of independence and a proven record of excellence in a number of computer-aided drug design techniques to assist in target identification and advancement of discovery programs.
Key qualities:
o Solid knowledge of computational chemistry and medicinal chemistry concepts
o Expertise in using and improving computational chemistry software as well as knowledge in scientific computing, and programming skills (e.g. Python, Perl, C, C++, Java)
o Experience of non-target based strategies (e.g. phenotypic screens) and or experience of computational chemistry applied on peptides, macrocycles or nucleotides.
o Expertise in using chemo informatics techniques
o Very good written and verbal communication skills
