The Nordic Africa Institute is seeking an experienced researcher of a professorial rank or its equivalent, with administrative/management, mentoring, and publishing experience for the position of a senior researcher and leader of the research cluster on Rural and Agrarian Change, Property and Resources . The incumbent will conduct and lead theoretically-sound, historically-informed and critical research on a broad portfolio of issues within the Rural Cluster. The cluster leader is a part of the research management team, and oversees the implementation of research plans and the co-ordination of research within the cluster and between the clusters of the institute.

The objective of the research cluster is to integrate perspectives from different disciplines in the social sciences and to take a broad view of African agrarian and rural change. Of primary importance is that the research can improve our understanding of the complexities and dynamics of rural Africa which also can provide a good basis for contributing to policy related initiatives and participating in public debate.
The Senior Researcher will conduct his/hers own research and should have experience in thematic sub-field/s of central relevance to the rural cluster.

The cluster leader will also participate in the activities linked to NAI's various scholarship programmes, planning seminars, networking and information dissemination. S/he is also expected to initiate processes for bridging empirical, theoretical and policy-relevant research, identify new and emerging research topics, policy dialogue, and collaboration with researchers and research institutions around the world, with emphasis on Africa and the Nordic countries.
The Cluster Leader?s tasks also include:
• Leading the team of researchers in the cluster
• Initiating policy and research activities within the cluster, including promoting intellectual exchanges within the cluster, organizing seminars, conferences, lectures
• Planning and coordination of a yearly action plan
• Follow up and supporting research activities within the cluster and research cooperation between clusters, which can ensure high quality and innovative research
• Initiating and participating in raising external funds for research programs at the institute
• Communication, promoting positive interaction within, and between NAI research clusters, and between the cluster and external partners such as CODESRIA, OSSREA, KAIPTC, EAC, ACCORD, CHR. Michelsen Institute, CMI, UNU-WIDER, DIIS and Nordic universities
• Recruitment, mentoring, and evaluation of researchers
• Monitoring the budget of the cluster
