The arena
Chief Scientist Lung Epithelium, is a role as Scientific Expert in the field of Lung Epithelium. It is a scientific role in the IMED RIA, where the role holder has a direct impact on R&D Discovery output through identification and validation of novel targets, assessment of external opportunities, and effective partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. The role holder will have a major impact on strategic development of the IMED RIA, ensuring that the portfolio is delivered today and that IMED RIA science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.
Job description
The successful candidate is an internationally recognised scientist with a strong publication track record and demonstrated scientific leadership in the area of Lung Epithelium. In addition, excellent communication skills and an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with an entrepreneurial attitude and delivery focus.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure the highest level of scientific quality in ongoing IMED RIA research and early development programmes (in the field detailed above) to achieve scientific excellence at all levels
Work closely with scientists, project leaders and line managers in IMED RIA to;Identify and validate novel targets, in vitro or in vivo models, repositioning of existing compounds
Ensure the quality and scientific rigor in project plans
Ensure overall quality of scientific experiments (with a focus on experimental design)
Assess external opportunities
Supervise and lead Post-doctoral researchers, PhD students or other scientists in scientific training
Raise the visibility and profile of RIA Lung Epithelium within and outside AZ
Build and maintain a network to key leading research institutions
Key Deliverables
Drive innovation and scientific excellence in the disease area through external collaborations, publications and competitive awarenessHigh quality or high impact journal publications are a key deliverable
Conference presentations on behalf of AZ
Drive and coordinate the identification and delivery of the best project opportunities regardless of source
Achieve scientific leadership in the areas of Lung Epithelium and early development for RIA Develop, coach, mentor, motivate and inspire IMED RIA scientists
Create and maintain a work environment in which scientific challenge and innovation are maximized
Foster a collaborative way of working with internal and external scientists/functions
Provide scientific support of late stage or launched products in the Lung epithelium field if and when required (interaction with the Global Medicines Development Organisation)
Provide scientific input to early clinical development activities
Interactions with grant giving bodies (eg European Commission) are encouraged and identifying external funding opportunities are encouraged
Continuously monitor the external environment to identify opportunities, threats and risks in a timely manner.
Contribute with knowledge and expertise in the activities required to deliver the Biology Area Strategies and Business Plan for the IMED.

Role model scientific debate and gain high visibility in AZ and the external community to create a dynamic, entrepreneurial and externally facing organization focused on delivery and that supports courageous leadership, innovation and collaboration, such that the IMED RIA is open to challenge, new ideas and innovative ways of working.
Collaborate closely with the respective MedImmune colleagues to ensure effective integration of research modality strategies and initiatives.
Collaborate strongly with IMED Bioscience leads and other Chief Scientists (within and outside IMED RIA) to identify and exploit intra and cross-IMED opportunities and embed best practice.
Collaborate closely with peers within and outside the IMED, in particular Bioscience Lung Regeneration, Bioscience Lung Immunity, Early Clinical Development, and GMD
Talent Management & Development
Provide high quality feedback and coaching to IMED RIA scientists including Post-doctoral researchers, PhD and Grad students, and mentor key talent in the organization
Education:
PhD or MD and post-doc experience preferable in the lung immunity Biology/Medicine
Requirements and Qualifications:
Will be an internationally recognised Scientist with a proven track record in the field and an academic affiliation.
Strong publication track record.
A demonstrated track record of building successful internal/external partnership and collaboration relationships, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness.
Experience and excellent understanding of the Therapeutic Area.
Understanding of pre-clinical R&D, payer, regulatory and commercial issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
Leadership and behaviours
