The successful candidate will work with a team of hardware and software engineers and take responsibility for the system-level design of this multi-site phased array radar in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This person will also deal extensively with industry to ensure that the overall system has the desired characteristics and also that it is sufficiently robust to provide several decades of service.
EISCAT_3D, will present the upper atmosphere and space science research community with an instrument providing capabilities not available anywhere else in the world. In particular, it will have unprecedented flexibility and spatial resolution needed to support studies of physical phenomena such as the aurora borealis (northern lights), micrometeor influx, and atmospheric wave phenomena.
The EISCAT_3D system will consist of approximately 10,000 crossed-dipole antennas at each of three sites. At one of the sites the antennas will transmit up to 5 MW of peak power in the VHF frequency band. At all three sites individual antenna will be interfaced to analog and digital electronics to provide highly flexible phased array antennas with 30 MHz of bandwidth. Beam forming will be handled digitally to allow multiple simultaneous high-gain antenna patterns to be produced. The system must also maintain very high stability and sensitivity to capture the signals of interest.
The EISCAT_3D development is now poised to enter an implementation phase of the project. A first step toward this implementation will include establishing industrial contacts for producing manufacture-ready subsystems with robust interfaces. It will also include the purchase of custom hardware to demonstrate interoperability of those subsystems prior to large-volume purchasing. This activity is expected to last until approximately the end of 2016. At that point we anticipate that the project will enter full-scale production and construction, pending the securing of full funding. The chief engineer would also oversee the technical aspects of these later activities to ensure that high quality and well-calibrated subsystems are delivered to the work sites.
This position will be based at EISCAT Headquarters in Kiruna, Sweden. Regional and international travel will be part of the regular routine. EISCAT follows employment terms comparable to governmental rules and EISCAT can assist in finding suitable accommodation in Kiruna. The working language at EISCAT is English and good communication skills are critical.
