Malmö opera performs a wide variety of repertoire including new operatic works and Musicals. 275 permanent employees and 500-700 freelance employees are engaged throughout a typical season where Malmö opera presents around 300 performances both inside the opera house and on tours around the region of Skåne. Malmö Opera seeks to appoint a freelance Casting Advisor to work on all aspects of casting for Malmö Opera productions. Malmö Opera performs four operas on our main stage per season.
As Casting Advisor you will work closely with the Artistic Director/CEO, who primarily has the overall responsibility for the casting, and other stake holders in assembling cast lists for all productions and provide advice on emerging talent and casting trends in the wider opera business.
Key duties include scouting talent through auditions and competitions, building and maintaining a database of artists, negotiating contracts, and schedules. This role requires extensive experience of the opera world, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to collaborate with directors, conductors, and agents.
Your profile is that of an experienced casting director, vocal/opera musician, a repetiteur/coach or studienleiter who has been casting at international level. You have an extensive knowledge of the vocal and operatic repertoire and can confidently choose voices that will suit Malmö Operas stage and productions.
Requirements
• You will have proven experience understanding the processes of casting, choosing complementary voice types and collaborating with directors and conductors - balancing their interests for each production with those of Malmö Opera's artistic strategy.
• You will generally be available to consult on all artistic matters affecting Malmö Opera casts and have a wide network of contacts of artists and agencies.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and organisational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Terms
• The position is seen as a fixed term part time role (up to 50%) within the structure of Malmö Opera, and you will liaise directly with Malmö Opera's Casting Assistant and various heads of departments.
• It is not required that you live in Malmö or even in Sweden, but there is the expectation that you will attend important meetings, auditions and premieres, and be available weekly by telephone/video and email as required.
Fixed term until October 2027.
